Ayurveda for Mental Health

By Ayurvedic principles, a truly well individual is one that is physically free of both symptoms and underlying sources of imbalance, mentally at peace, and spiritually elevated. Many Ayurvedic therapies offer both physical and mental healing, illustrating time and time again the deep connection between mind and body.

While the Ayurvedic approaches to mental health are numerous, here are a few therapies and practices, unique to Ayurveda, that promote a healthy mind and spirit.

  1.  Sattva Avajaya: Regulating the Mind
Sattva Avajaya is a psychotherapeutic practice mentioned in the Charakasamhita, used by Ayurvedic practitioners to address mental and emotional distress. Through this therapy, the patient is equipped with methods to restrain the mind from unwholesome thoughts. An expert Ayurveda physician can help to regulate thought process, replace negative ideas, and properly channelling presumptions.
  2. Daiva Vyapasraya Chikitsa: Spiritual Therapy
In this spiritual Ayurvedic treatment, a combination of specialised methods including mantras (incantations), oushadhis (sacred herbs), prayaschitta (repentance), and upavasa (fasting), are engaged to heal the mind and spirit.
  3. Panchakarma: 5 Process Bio-Cleansing
This authentic Ayurvedic regime has been proved to be extremely effective in managing mental health struggles. The calming, cleansing, and rejuvenating experience can help the mind feel as light as the body.
  4. Shirodhara: Medicated-Oil Dripping
This Ayurvedic treatement, involving medicated oil being poured gently over the scalp and forehead, has been known to help insomnia, anxiety, neurosis, depression and many other mental health conditions.
  5. Nasya: Nasal Medication
The nasal passage is considered in Ayurveda to be a port to the brain. Nasya has been advocated for by Ayurveda experts for the treatment and management of many mental health conditions.
  6. Ayurvedic Diet
Diet can play a substantial role in treating mental health conditions. A diet that is planned in relationship with doshas, designed to address an individual’s specific needs can keep the mind healthy and light, along with the body.
